The Wyvern has over 50 years of history.
It was originally established in 1969 as the Somerset County Council Sports and Social Club. At this time when County Hall had thousands of staff there were various sports teams playing at the Wyvern, all made up of County Council employees. By the end of the 20th century the hockey, netball, football and cricket teams had all disbanded. With the new millennium came teams to re-establish cricket and football, while the rugby team changed from Sunday social to playing on Saturdays. These teams continue today, maintaining the Wyvern as sports facility on the east side of Taunton. Throughout the squash has been a constant, providing a key venue for the wider Taunton area.
From the beginning the heart of the Wyvern has been the bar and lounge area. Many families have grown up with the Wyvern as a fond memory for evening meals, birthdays and parties.
Nowadays The Wyvern has a pub license, allowing anyone to visit for a meal and a drink without the need for membership. In the summer of 2024 The Wyvern ceased to be a “members club”, having changed its status to a Community Interest Company, becoming The Wyvern Taunton CIC. Now with the Community as a focal point, the Wyvern aims to provide facilities for the local community, providing sports grounds, meeting rooms and a hall for wider use by all.
